Start with two different kinds of surface data
The facial scan provides facial context. The intraoral scan provides the dental surfaces. Fiscan imports an upper-arch intraoral model and an optional lower-arch model in STL or PLY format, then lets you establish their relationship with the facial model.
STL normally contains geometry without color. PLY can include vertex colors, but not every PLY export includes them. A colored PLY does not by itself separate individual teeth from gingiva or palate. Check what your scanner exports and keep the original files.
A practical alignment sequence
- Reconstruct the face and inspect the mouth region. Complete and save the intended head-position correction.
- Import the upper intraoral model and, when needed, the lower model. Check the file scale and orientation.
- Use the available manual, corresponding-point or automatic alignment tools to establish the relationship. For three-point alignment, choose matching, well-separated surface locations rather than three points in a straight line.
- Review the relationship from the front and both sides. Inspect the overlapping visible dental surfaces; do not judge the result from the front view alone.
- Save the alignment, review the virtual articulator or reference frame if used, and export the compatible Dental CAD project package.
- Open the export in the intended exocad installation and check scale, orientation, arch identity and relative model positions before continuing.
What should I check before accepting alignment?
A plausible visual overlay is a starting point. Missing facial tooth surfaces, lips covering the teeth, different expressions and incomplete intraoral exports can make a match uncertain. Review the geometry actually shared by both datasets. Distance-map colors describe geometric differences under the selected display range; they do not certify the clinical accuracy of the complete case.
If the source data does not contain enough common surface detail, recapture or obtain more suitable input instead of forcing a visually convenient fit.
Does this work with every exocad setup?
Fiscan prepares exocad-compatible project data. exocad is a separate third-party product; a specific workflow can depend on its version, licensed modules and configuration. Evaluate an exported example in your actual installation before adopting the workflow. Compatibility does not imply endorsement or certification by exocad.
