Create a facial model with Fiscan

Follow Fiscan's capture guidance to create a textured 3D face model on a compatible mobile device. Review the model, align it with imported intraoral scan data and prepare it for your CAD workflow. The current release supports compatible iPhone and iPad devices, with an Android version coming soon.

The facial model provides context for alignment. Use a separate intraoral scan for the detailed dental surface data needed in your workflow.

Which devices can I use?

  • The published iOS app requires iOS 15.5 or later; the iPad app requires iPadOS 15.5 or later. Installation compatibility alone does not confirm capture capability.
  • Android support is coming soon. Supported Android devices and system requirements will be confirmed at launch.
  • Check the capture availability shown in Fiscan on the actual device before starting a scan.
  • Front scanning requires a supported TrueDepth front camera. It captures and reconstructs on the mobile device without uploading the scan or using a Mac.
  • Rear-camera recordings can be reconstructed in the cloud or on a Mac. Cloud reconstruction needs an internet connection. For local reconstruction, run FiRecon on a compatible Mac on the same local network.

How should I capture the face?

Obtain permission from the person being scanned and review the face-data notice. Choose Front camera scan or Rear camera scan in Fiscan, then follow that method's guide.

Front camera: self-scanning with TrueDepth

  1. Start about 25–40 cm from the front camera, at eye level, with your forehead and chin fully visible. Use soft light and avoid direct sunlight.
  2. Keep your expression steady. Slowly turn your head left and right and gently tilt up and down, or move the phone to change the view. Avoid large or abrupt movements.
  3. Watch the live distance and coverage cues. Green shows captured areas; amber and visible gaps indicate where more views are needed.
  4. Check the surface, stop when coverage is sufficient and save the model on your device. There is no fixed scan duration and no reconstruction upload.

Rear camera: capture with a helper

  1. Keep the subject's head and expression still while a helper moves the phone. Keep the forehead and chin in frame, with the face filling most of the image.
  2. Tap the face to focus before recording. Make slow, overlapping passes at eye level, slightly above and slightly below. Pause and refocus if details become blurry.
  3. Reconstruct the recording in the cloud or with FiRecon on your Mac, then inspect the facial surface and texture.

The rear-camera workflow is recommended for finer facial detail and texture. For either method, inspect the mouth region before using it for intraoral alignment; recapture if relevant surfaces are incomplete.

Signed-in users can capture and view front scans locally without a subscription. Export, sharing, both Smile Preview modes, and cloud or Mac reconstruction require an active subscription.

What accuracy should I expect?

A high-resolution texture is not proof of geometric accuracy. Fiscan does not publish a guaranteed micrometre accuracy value on this page. Results depend on the device, lighting, subject stability and capture coverage. Evaluate repeatability with your own reference data and inspect scale, head position and alignment before downstream use.
